What would Leonardo....?

Dear 8th grade GATE students,

On our webquest there are some examples of these "what if..." questions. You need to type on paper a response to one of the example questions and turn it in to me since you won't have access to respond online.

After you've done that, come back here and think of a question related to the idea of wondering what Leonardo might be doing if he were alive today.  Post your question here by using the Comments section at the bottom of this Blog.

Then read through other people's questions and respond thoughtfully to at least three of them.

  1. If he were still alive today would he influence the modern art or would we be stuck in the renaissance art time? Think of time travel and he came here. Would he choose to change our art or change his way of art?

    1. I think Leonardo coming to 2016 with time travel wouldn't affect our art much other than him adding more art to our collection. At some point, we have to move on and we can't keep doing the same thing over and over.

    2. I think Leo coming to 2016 would change our art. If Leo starts making money here then other artists will see this and change their art to gain more money using more of a renaissance style as Leo would.

      Delete
    3. I think that he wouldn't affect today's art much more than he already has. He was one of the first painters to paint people realistically with bone structures and so on, and we can still see influences of that in today's art.

    4. I think that Leonardo coming to 2016 would more change the art of the future than our art now. In his time people didn't change their art to be like his but we were later influenced by it. Leonardo would probably stick to the same style that he had but he would use our new materials to his advantage to enhance his work.

    5. If Leonardo was alive in our time we would most likely still have some classic Renaissance artworks but he would eventually become a modern artist with works outside the Renaissance time period.

      Delete
    6. He would not influence modern art, but modern art may influence him.

  2. If Leonardo was alive today, who would he be inspired by, if anyone?

    1. If Leonardo were alive today I believe he would be inspired by Bill Gates. This is because in his time there was nothing of a cell phone or a pc software.

      Delete
    2. In a more broad sense, I think he'd be fascinated by the first things of their kind with their inventors, like Steve Jobs with Apple. I believe he be inspired by people that had a greater impact on life itself or created such a colossal monopolizing company.

      Delete
    3. I personally think that Leonardo would be inspired by organizations such as the ALAWF (American League Against War and Fascism) because of his hatred for war. I also think that on a professional level, Leonardo would be inspired by inventors such as Jy Mangano.

      Delete
    4. Leonardo would most likely be inspired by the efforts of modern scientists, such as Einstein of the 1900's, Tesla, Schrodinger, and other large influences on the modern perception and knowledge we have today of their respective fields as a whole.

  3. If leo was alive today would he try to compete with other artists/inventors/scientists?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, Leonardo would try to compete because he would need money. Leonardo did the same thing when he made weapons for the Duke of Milan even though he didn't support violence.

      Delete
    2. While not being for war in a literal sense, I think he'd definitely want to complete with fellow inventors, scientists, and artists to see who was truly the person with the most abstract spectacle of an imagination. It's like war, but almost a friendly sparring with your mind.

      Delete
    3. Leonardo would most likely ignore all the other professionals around him. Instead of focusing on beating others, he would work in his own space and naturally become superior.

      Delete
    4. I don't think Leo would have to try hard to be better and compete with others. Considering all the amazing things he created way before his time, it's hard to imagine what he would do with our current technology. I think he wouldn't have to try, he would literally just create and discover better things than others.

      Delete
    5. There is no doubt in my mind that Leonardo would try to compete with others. Leonardo would try to show his superiority in art science and technology to the people of this time, as he is one of the greatest of all time.

      Delete
    6. Yes, Leonardo was very determined and always wanted to be the best. He would compete with others. (and win obviously)

      Delete
    7. I think he wouldn't be able to because of the huge differences from our time eras. New styles of art have come and Leonardo wouldn't even know much about them. In terms of science and inventing present day scientists have gone far beyond Leonardo's study of sciences. Inventing has modernized too. What would be a challenge for Leonardo to build in the renaissance has probably already been invented. Since Leonardo came from a less advanced time his ideas would also probably be only good for that time. With his renaissance mind he couldn't make new ideas in our time period.

  4. If Leonardo was alive today, would he still use his old drawing and painting techniques, or would he start using a tablet and stylus?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Leonardo would defiantly eventually adapt to use tablet and stylus because he would see others doing it and want to improve his abilities.

      Delete
    2. I think that Leonardo might start out using his old techniques, but he would eventually start to use a tablet and stylus because he sees others making great art that way.

      Delete
    3. I think that he would start using the new technology that is available in this day but that he would still use his original methods of sculptures and paint. He would probably make a new form of art that we haven't thought of.

      Delete
    4. If Leo were alive today, I think he would use new technology. He was part of the Renaissance, which means new era. Leonardo was part of a time which was meant for inventing and accepting the new. Also, he may even invent more technology, along with what we have now.

      Delete
    5. Leonardo would most likely stay old school with what he learned since its what he did his best works in but in this day and age technology would creep into his works and he would eventually have to use it.

      Delete
    6. He would use a combination of both.

      Delete
    7. I believe that Leonardo would probably mainly use old school techniques because he was very talented with these tools, and he would probably be the best in this area. As the saying goes, "If it isn't broke, don't fix it".

  5. How might Leonardo react to modern war machines?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Leonardo would be truly baffled by how much destruction can be cause by such small weapons. At the same time, he would be appalled because he doesn't condone violence.

      Delete
    2. Well since Leonardo had created the groundwork for many of the weapons, he would probably be fascinated by the power that people had created using his design, maybe feel pride at his inventions coming as far as they did. However due to his opinions of war and violence he would most likely not condone the use of the weapons.

      Delete
    3. He would want to know exactly how they work.

      Delete
    4. He would probably be overwhelmed by how much war machines have changed or how many new ones have been invented. Not only do we have flying machines we have flying machines that drop bombs. Since he came from such a far back time he would be amazed at these inventions.

      Delete
  6. If Leonardo had not designed war machines because he didn’t believe in war, how different would our military weapons be now?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We wouldn't have as strong weapons such as tanks and powerfully weapons. Such things as tanks would be replaces with regular guns. Our weapons would be less powerful.

      Delete
    2. I think that our weapons would be more watered-down than previously thought. Who knows, we might even be using Nerf guns as weapons. I think he'd find a way to make a more humane or thoughtful way of winning a battle or war.

      Delete
    3. Since Leonardo invented the base of most of our modern weapons, without him they would be different. Not necessarily better or worse but still very different. Some of his ideas we still use and our entire system would be changed.

      Delete
    4. Since Leonardo's military inventions were usually reinvented over the course of time, most of his weapons would eventually be created. Granted, they wouldn't have the base of Leonardo's, which could change their appearance and their course of improvement. But they would still potentially be viable.

      Delete
    5. Are way of war would be different with the tank being completely gone.

      Delete
    6. Leonardo did make warmachines, but a lot of the things he came up with weren’t actually made, so the his effect on the industry would be minimal. One example if this might be when he came up with a tank design. No one made it, so it didn’t do as much.

  7. The residential market is tough. What do you believe Leonardo's dream home would look like? Would it be so grand that it would be too much to make, fund, and work on and had to be left as a mere sketch, a figment of his imagination?

    1. I believe Leonardo would live in a modernly furnished, medium sized apartment. He could focus with the minimal decor while still showing his love of art and architect.

      Delete
    2. I believe Leonardo's house size would of course depend on where he decides to live and where he works, which will effect the wage he gets. If he lived in a healthy community where everyone loved art he would be making a nice living, wage wise, and would possibly be living in a large/ medium sized with nice modern furniture. Being Leonardo he probably have one room for art and another for science. Leonardo da Vinci was not known for completing projects so he would have closets full of unfinished artworks.

    3. I think Leonardo would design his own home and optimize it for productivity. He would want to live in a small town, close to nature, but would need to live in a somewhat populated area to communicate his ideas. To compromise, I think Leonardo would live on the outskirts of a major city.

  8. What would Leonardo's political views be? Would he be a Republican or Democrat? Explain.

  9. If he was alive today, Where (in the United States) would Leonardo Da Vinci live?

    1. If Leonardo was alive today, I believe he would live in a small town. Leonardo would love the feel of being alone and the silence of country living. Although, I could also see him living in a Brooklyn, New York apartment, working on his works in his studio. But, I feel that the quiet of rural living would more suit Leonardo.

    2. I think Leonardo would live in a very creative and artistic city if here were alive today. He liked to look at things and expand into things others didn't. His many interests could effect his decision. He definitely wouldn't want to be in a loud city because there would be a lot of people, noise, and distractions.

      Delete
    3. Leonardo would live in a large and populated city such as New York or Chicago. He would need to be easily contacted by possible investors, and he would gain many experiences that could influence his art.

      Delete
    4. I think that if Leonardo was alive today, he would live in a poor town with lots of poverty. He would probably move to the town to research so that he could invent a new machine to help them. He may make a new medicine for HIV or AIDS that they could afford.

      Delete
    5. I believe that Leonardo would live in the state of New York. There are many different areas in New York. Leonardo can paint the beautiful hills upstate, and then show off his works in the most populated city in the country, New York City.

      Delete
    6. I could see Leonardo living in somewhere more rural area of a state but still have access to drive to a big city if he wanted to

      Delete
    7. I think he would love to live in New York because it may be the closest thing to the busy streets of Italy

      Delete
  10. Where would Leonardo attend school now with all of the various options?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I see Leonardo going to no school at all, for he wouldn't have any time since he would be so busy painting and inventing. If he did go to school, he would be going as a teacher instead of a student.

      Delete
    2. I don't think Leonardo would go to school. There is nothing the school would teach him that he can teach himself. He would find school boring and would not get much out of it anyway.

      Delete
    3. I think Leonardo would go to school for like one month before getting kicked out for being really annoying and correcting teachers.

      Delete
    4. I would think Leonardo would probably found his own university instead of enrolling in somebody else's

      Delete
    5. I think that Leonardo da Vinci would be going to some sort of art school and probably never get things turned in, however things that he would might learn will help him make a new painting possibly even better than the Mona Lisa.

      Delete
    6. I think Leonardo would finish High School, but would not attend college. I feel as though Leonardo would feel confined at an art school and would probably get in trouble for turning in assignments late.

  12. If Leonardo was alive today, which social media would he use most.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think Leonardo da Vinci would use social media. He would view it as a distraction that takes away from his productivity.

      Delete
    2. I believe that if Leonardo was alive today he would use Instagram and Pinterest the most. This is because on those social medias people post pictures of themselves, so in this way he could possibly be able to take a closer look at bone structure while he is painting that person especially if that person is at work and is not capable of coming to his studio that day. The websites also contain pictures of nature from all around. He would use these grand pictures for extravagant backgrounds in his artworks. Those pictures come from all around the globe and come with new colors and shading, making him explore his artistic ability even more. He could get closer with his details in his artworks. On the app, Instagram, he would be capable of zooming in on any picture and look at detail. People also post pictures of items and objects that they believe are artistic and colorful. So, on Pinterest and Instagram he could search for those artistic pictures and find something to give him inspiration in an instant.

    3. If Da Vinci was alive today he would use Instagram so he could post his photos of inventions

      Delete
    4. I believe that Leonardo would probably use almost all of the social media apps so that he could get pictures of his paintings to everyone on the internet.

      Delete
    5. I believe Leonardo would have a practically inactive Instagram account. This would be to post invention ideas or other things like that.

      Delete
    6. Leonardo would probably use mostly tumblr. and deviantart because he'd be able to take inspiration from other artists. But also seeing as he was a horrible procrastinator, instead of making art to post he'd probably just look at pictures of cats or superwholock fan art for hours.

  13. If Leonardo was still alive, what things do you think he would invent?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's quite possible he wouldn't be inventing anything. Back in the Renaissance time, he was such a procrastinator that in 67 years, he finished about 15 paintings. In our time, extreme procrastination isn't tolerated with our artists.

    3. Yes, I think Leonardo would end up making a lot of new inventions because he would have access to modern tools and building materials. Also, he could use stronger metal alloys to build more effective inventions. I think he would have his own company because he would have lots of patents on hundreds of different products, and he would probably be richer than Bill Gates because he would have a large company earning him billions of dollars.

    2. I think Leonardo would be amazed with modern power tools and inventions because they would open an entire field of new inventions Leonardo could make. Also, modern tools would help Leonardo make many of his drawings a reality because he could use modern alloys which are stronger and lighter than the building materials of his time.
